CAPS® and BD Form Collaboration to Provide Ready-to-Use, Pre-Filled Anesthesia Syringes for Use with the BD Intelliport™ Medication Management System
IRVINE, CA (June 11, 2016) – Central Admixture Pharmacy Services, Inc. (CAPS) and BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE: BDX), today announced that they have entered into a collaboration agreement that will offer BD Intelliport™ Medication Management System customers the opportunity to purchase a portfolio of frequently used CAPS’ pre-filled anesthesia syringes capable of being automatically identified and utilized by the BD Intelliport System for real-time patient safety checks and hands-free electronic medication documentation.
Under the agreement, CAPS will offer a new service line of pharmacy-compounded, pre-filled anesthesia syringes compatible with the BD Intelliport System. For this new service line, BD, in turn, will grant CAPS a period of exclusivity to utilize syringes incorporating proprietary BD technology for enabling fully-automated medication and drug concentration identification during syringe connection to a BD Intelliport Injection Site.
CAPS’ 503B-registered outsourcing facilities offer pre-filled anesthesia syringes designed to prevent common compounding and labeling errors that occur in the operating room, while maintaining sterility and potency for extended beyond use dating. The pre-filled anesthesia syringes are prepared in a controlled environment and have undergone release testing for sterility, potency and endotoxin to meet strict new FDA quality control requirements.
The BD Intelliport System is the first-of-its-kind solution to provide real-time medication identification, dose measurement and patient drug allergy alerting at the point of injection, while wirelessly sending captured information directly into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) following medication administration.
“Anesthesiologists have the convenience of ready-to-use, pre-prepared medications that now can be combined with the BD Intelliport System for added patient safety and improved workflow,” said Mike Koch, Senior Vice President, CAPS Professional Services. “CAPS has always insisted that patient safety drive our pharmacy service offerings, and becoming the exclusive outsourcing provider of pre-filled syringes for use with the innovative BD Intelliport System is an important step in meeting our companies’ mutual goal of reducing patient errors.”
“This collaboration with CAPS exemplifies BD’s commitment to provide our customers with medication management solutions that will help clinicians deliver safer and more efficient care,” said Richard Byrd, Vice President and General Manager for BD Medical – Medication & Procedural Solutions. “BD continuously seeks opportunities to help reduce medication errors and enabling this new CAPS offering of pre-filled anesthesia syringes compatible with the BD Intelliport System is yet another example of our dedication to greater medication safety.”
